Coronavirus forced major swing in Aussie attitudes, says survey

A NEW survey has found that COVID-19 has caused a swing in attitude among Australians that could have long-term effects on the property market.
The survey, conducted by RSL Art Union in December and again in May, looked at what makes a “dream home” for Australians. It found that more people valued proximity to work or places they regularly visited (14 per cent), compared with those who wanted to be closer to their family and friends (10 per cent). When the same survey was held in May, 77 per cent valued proximity to family rather than work.

She counts herself among the lucky ones living close to family.
“We are all super close, I am one of five and (husband) Aaron has a brother with five children and our parents are all close as well.”

“We tend to live in our own little bubble,” she said of their life in Mudgeeraba, where they currently live. “We’re lucky where we live as our suburb is super close-knit.”
RSL Art Union General Manager, Tracey Bishop was not surprised by the finding that Aussies had changed their perspective when it came to their dream homes post lockdown.

“I think these unusual times have changed our perspective and when we asked our customers, the results showed a shift away from the preference to have their dream house near work. Of course, with this prize you could win a luxury lifestyle plus plenty of space for your extended family to move in next door.”
She said they continued to see strong support for the RSL Art Union and veterans throughout the COVID lockdown, “as people embrace the possibility of winning their dream home while supporting an important cause at the same time”.
How much do I need to retire?
For Mrs McInnes-Ball, the newest prize is the ideal dream home.
“My idea of a dream home would be to fit all the children in comfortably, have a pool, which they are all so desperate for, and have somewhere that the kids could be for as long as they ever wanted.”
“Realistically, setting them up for life,” she said, adding “and somewhere that has enough car spaces, five kids in five years, no idea what I’m going to do when they all get their licences”.
